Top 10 iPad Book Apps to Keep a Bored Kid Busy

| April 18, 2011 | 7 Comments

Not all digital book apps will entertain a bored kid, especially when traveling. While I am a big fan of iPad books with subtle enhancements that don’t overwhelm the storytelling, there are times when a parent wants an iPad book app with more ‘bells & whistles’, especially when you need to keep a child engaged without much assistance from an adult. This time is coming up soon in my life, as I plan for a road trip with my son from Seattle to San Diego next month. So I challenged myself to come up with a list of books that I want to have loaded on my iPad 2 that would be fun for a bored kid, aged 4-8.

On our site you can sort books by length (either in pages or average time a child might play with the book app in one sitting). Or you can sort by ‘extras‘ and ‘re-readability‘. From these sorts, I tried to pick books that will keep a kid happy for a stretch of at least 30 minutes/per app. This list includes some long stories, a lot of interactive books and a few that have extras included, like games, puzzles and coloring pages. All of them can be played by children with little or no assistance from an adult.

I bet my kids would love Miss Spider’s Tea Party. I will have to download that to my iPad. Right now their favorite app on my iPad is our TV Everywhere app that I have with my provider/employer DISH Network. The kids love watching their TV shows while we are running errands and on our road trips. We have access to all our subscription channels and our DVR recordings. All I had to do was purchase the sling adapter for $99.00 and the app was free to download. It is by far the best app I have to keep the kids entertained.
